RDM will close the Blendecques carton board mill

Reno de Médicis (RDM) will abandon carton board production in France in August. There are 176 people affected by the closure of the group’s only French mill, which has been facing difficulties for some time, particularly since a major fire in March 2022, which led to a ten-month shutdown. (At the time, RDM invested 40 million euros in the site). Also, the Blendecques mill, which specializes in coated carton board used for food packaging or hygiene products, flooded at the end of last year, which forced it to stop production for some time. RDM also announced that a buyer search period would begin on March 26th, 2024. This announcement came shortly after the company’s decision to start up the Villa Santa Lucia plant in Italy. The Blendecques plant produced coated and uncoated recycled carton board with a capacity of 140,000 t/year.

The manufacturer of graphic papers based on recovered fibres has thus declared that the operation of the old PM1 at the Schwedt site will be discontinued by mid-2024. Production will focus on the more sophisticated PM4. The PM1 closure will involve a hundred employees. Closing PM1 is part of Leipa’s strategy to streamline operations. Another measure concerns the Schrobenhausen site, where investment volumes will be adapted to the difficult market environment.
